Multimodal Virtual Embodiment Simulation to Enhance Empathy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

What is the Purpose of this Study?

The purpose of this study is to evaluate a virtual reality (VR) simulation combined with a gentle abdominal binder in outpatients at Cedars-Sinai who have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Researchers want to work directly with people living with IBS to determine whether this simulation can realistically mirror the bloating and discomfort that is experienced. The goal is to refine the tool so it can eventually help doctors and other healthcare providers better understand what it feels like to live with IBS. Participants will be asked to try the VR simulation, which includes both virtual and physical elements. Afterward, researchers will interview the participants individually and ask about their experience using the simulation (what worked well and how it could be improved). This feedback will help make the simulation more realistic and useful.
