Investigation of a Novel, Magnetically Levitated VAD for Refractory Left Ventricular Heart Failure (INNOVATE Trial)

Purpose of Study

What is the Purpose of this Study?

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an experimental device called the BrioVAD System compared to the commercially available HeartMate 3 LVAS. Both the BrioVAD System and HeartMate 3 LVAS are left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) that help pump blood from the lower left chamber of the heart to the rest of the body. An LVAD is used to treat weakened hearts or heart failure and may be a temporary measure while waiting for a heart transplant or permanent solution. Researchers aim to determine whether the BrioVAD System can safely assist heart function in people who are at risk of serious side effects due to advanced heart failure. Participants will be patients who are eligible for implantation of an LVAD. The BrioVAD Pump is a small implantable blood pump; it has no mechanical bearings which may wear or fail over time. Instead, the device uses a magnetically levitated rotor, which is a round disk with engineered pumping features meant to gently move blood from the left side of the heart to the body’s main artery (aorta) and may help improve blood flow to the body.
