The purpose of this study is to collect blood cultures from individuals suspected of having a blood stream infection (BSI). A BSI is caused by bacteria or fungi in the blood stream that causes one to feel ill. A blood culture is a lab test that helps detect bacteria or fungi in a person’s blood sample. The blood samples taken for the study will be used to test an experimental blood culture device called BD BACTEC FXI Culture System, which is designed to detect such infections quickly and easily. Participants will be patients whose doctor has ordered lab tests that require a blood draw as part of routine care; they will be asked to have an additional blood sample collected to test the study blood culture device. The blood sample will then be tested to determine whether bacteria or fungi are present. Up to 2-4 additional teaspoons of blood will be needed per donation to participate in this study.
