Pragmatic Evaluation of Events and Benefits of Lipid-Lowering in Older Adults

What is the Purpose of this Study?

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a drug called atorvastatin (a type of statin) can help older adults live well for a longer period of time by preventing dementia, disability, or heart disease. The study focuses on people who are 75 years or older who do not have dementia, a significant disability that limits basic everyday activities, or heart disease. Statins are used to lower the level of bad cholesterol (LDL-C) in the body. They prevent heart attacks, strokes, and slow the progression of heart disease in high-risk patients or people who have already had these problems. Atorvastatin may have a role in preventing the development of dementia or cardiovascular events. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either atorvastatin or placebo (inactive substance). They will also undergo memory and physical tests, as well as blood draws.
